Envisioned in 2012 and pioneered in 2015, DRILFix™ motors can be configured to deliver a wide range of performance. For high torque reaming solutions a 2.2 stages, 9:10 lobe full metal power section can be used whereas a 5 - 7 stage variant can be deployed for drilling with casing applications putting out several thousands of ft-lbs of torque.
The DRILFix™ motor family was designed for high torque reaming operations where conventional reaming tools like static reamers, reciprocating and ratcheting reamers and some hydraulically actuated high speed reamers are traditionally ineffective and efficient. DRILFix™ motors provide a high torque alternative that delivers drilling and reaming torque where it is needed the most, at the shoe.
DRILFix™ motors are adaptable. Drillable systems are designed for casing sizes up to 24 inches with utilisation in jetting in conductors and drilling / landing surface casing in deepwater operations a possibility that could lead to better handling of shallow gas hazzards and several days of rig days saved.
Non-drillable systems can replace sacrificial motors and eliminate the otherwise unnecessary components that are currently bundled together with them.
DRILFix™ motors are designed to provide most of the benefits of a conventional downhole drilling motor with the added ability of being able to conveniently drill out the internals of the tool. It can be run with conventional casing bits or with a static reamer shoe.
When the DRILFix™ was first conceived a PRO version was envisaged as a solution for high step-out horizontal wells where the entire tool (stator) is rotated in preference to the stator. This was the birth of the REACTv™ Sub in May of 2016.
DRILFix™ motors can be used to drill through zones with severe challenges such as total losses, borehole collapse or/and time dependent wellbore instability. Operations that require the casing to be landed as quickly as possible.
DRILFix™ motors are limited to drilling tangentially or vertically. They can also be used to land final casing, liner or completion strings where drill-out is not an option.
DRILFix™ motors are trimmed down mud motors and are therefore always shorter in length than conventional downhole motors.
Future development of this technology after successful field trials will invest in being able to drill directionally with this technology. This will require converting a close tolerance system to steerable with the added requirement of being able to acquire directional surveys.
Drilling with casing (DwC) can be optimised with the DRILFix™ casing motors delivering additional rotational speeds to casing bits
Drillable DRILFix™ motor systems come with hollow rotors. These are full metal power sections to eliminate issues with rubber chunking associated with conventional elastomeric stators.
Shown here is a 9:10 lobe, 2.2 stage full metal power section for the 9⅝" DRILFix™ prototype.
